Four Hands Pottery
Four Hands Pottery began when potter, Allen Reed and sculptor, Lindsay Dawkins met in a ceramics studio in the spring of 2007. After watching each other work on their respective pieces, an interesting thought occurred to them. Shortly thereafter, Allen asked Lindsay, “If I throw something on the wheel would you carve into it?” And a partnership was formed!
Allen’s proficiency on the potter’s wheel and natural eye for form, combined with Lindsay’s extreme patience and attention to detail, has led to the creation of fine handcrafted dinnerware and decorative pieces. Though their pieces are collaborative, the creative process for each artist is quite independent. Allen will often throw a form without any input from Lindsay as to what the final shape will be. Lindsay will then set to work on decorating the form without consulting Allen as to what the pattern will be. However, it all comes together in the end as they always glaze their works as a team.
Outside of their cooperative pieces, each artist creates individual, functional, and sculptural works of art. Whether they are working together or alone, the energy, thought, and care involved is evident in each piece created.
“Fine art is that in which the hand, the head, and the heart of man go together.”
- John Ruskin, art critic and author
